Tell me why would a person rather be incarcerated; locked away

Than to endure the torment of being gay

I like Zora Neale Hurston say, My People, My People

We’ve bought into the stereotypes "The Man" gave

But "The Man" is not Asian, Hispanic, or White

The Man is the person to your left and your right

My people may be brown, Indian, or gay

But attention is my people and it’s calling you out in front of your face

We are so adept at unraveling everyone else’s problem

All the while ignorant and neglectful of our own

We spend so much time judging others

Let they that have not sinned cast the first stone

Our words are like habits they can make or break us

Tempting that which is obscure is often dangerous

Thoughts, feelings, and abilities aren’t known

Neither is attention, its existence is long gone

You may ask who am I to say these things

I am an entity deserving high      Regard

                                                Engaging in pro-social behavior

Portraying   Something that is due to a dog

                                                Persevering through life

                                                Exhibiting concern and consideration

                   An illustration of     Civilization

Taking time to make someone’s day

I AM RESPECT

Oh ye hypocrites who do not practice what they preach

I advise you be cognitive to the destiny you’re to meet

Hiding behind lies and false pretenses

Guilty of deluding those who are innocent

You who make adverse statements that are euphonious
Reveling in the fabrication of chaos

I am your antagonist, adversary, and foe

I am attention who make all opacities glow

I am tired of hearing a fellow teen is dead

Because they’d rather be defiant instead

The Reaper is waiting, Surprise! For you to meet your demise
Phobia is my deepest dread

So much animosity towards one another

Weren’t we all born of the same mother [Eve?]
Violence is an answer but it's not the solution

To the state of tranquility I cleave

In the seconds that just went by

You missed something decisive in your life
I'm begging and beseeching you to pay attention

Everyone wants to talk but no one’s listenin

I sure hope I got someone’s attention

Aqil, this is profoundly insightful! A thought provoking write with a wisdom of understanding that belies your years. I cannot give a complete critique on this writing yet, for I have read it only once. I will however read it deeply and in an expeditionary way to uncover the gems of wisdom and deep thought contained herein. Excellent work,
best regards
David
