As I’m sure it is with most readers, there have been several books that I have read more than once in my life. Not necessarily for their genteel literary value, but (for me) mostly for the sheer pleasure of the story-line, and characters, and the creative afterglow that I (at times) experience after finishing. One of them (I just re-read some weeks ago) is ‘LOST HORIZON’ by James Hilton; the first novel published in paperback in 1939 by Ian Ballantine.

These syllable formats were birthed from that reading. Snippets from the "Valley of Blue Moon"

All seek life’s’ essence,
Caught between that world and this
(Temporarily)

Swatting constantly,
Imagining a future
Freed from ego-flies

~~~~~~~~
Witching valley herb
Coursing over lazy tongue
Sharpens expression;
The sway of mild narcotics
Feathering conversation
Tangatse berry
Tea in lazuline china,
(Less superfluous)
Nothing is sacred
In a world of usurpers’
Seeking to oppress
Tranquilities snow-white calm,
(Rigorous self-discipline)
An ascetic life,
Pantomime with platitudes,
All moderation
~~~~~~~~

Tibetan secrets
Exposed through longevity;
This drenching beauty
Embracing all-knowingness
At the threshold of dying

To again regain
Subtle sensibilities;
One moment retrieved

Despairing (when grasped)
The horror of Shangri-La’s
Sacred proviso;
Conway stays amenable
In the High Lamas presence

Richard,
I just finished re-reading the entire Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Big sigh:) I can't wait for her next book.

This poem is a great celebration of the book you honor. Well done and well shared. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

Would that the Lost Horizon could be revealed to each of us...

Swatting constantly,
Imagining a future
Freed from ego-flies

Beautifully said, Richard.

Just recently I reread Wouk's excellent WINDS OF WAR and WAR AND REMEMBRANCE for the third time. Wouk captures the horors of WW2.

so richly crafted Sir Richard. You capture the essence of our minds continuous wondering and wandering seeking the reasons....I also agree with John F. Splendid poem!

A fascinating piece; I am drawn strongly to the spirit of Tibetan culture.....what's left of it, after Chinese brutality.

There are books that I have reread, too...they bring out a certain emotion that causes thoughts and words to flow. This is soft and beautiful, Richard.

You bring out many strong emotions of past and present. Always find it amazing what goes through the mind when reading and you express these feelings so vividly...

Be always safe,

These pared, elegant lines are, in essence, a book review...and one of my favourite reads, too, Richard; love, in particular, the first five lines of the second format...just perfect.

As it happens, I just finished reading 1984 for the third time. No warm fuzzies after completion, though. That much is assured. However, I did get the feeling you described after reading Love in the Time of Cholera again a few years back. I love the line: "this drenching beauty." It really describes the wetness of awe and inspiration soaking on the skin like warm water in sunshine. Excellent piece, gentle on the mind, afterglow established! Best always.
