He was right there in front of me. (We're about to celebrate our 21st anniversary).
ps--That other woman was his roommate's fiancee. (whew, good thing!)

Hearts broken, we looked across the balconies

Of our facing apartments, each barren in a different way.

He thought, "Whoa, she yells a lot (teenagers in the house, red flag);

She likes country music? And sports! Always with a tennis racket,

A basketball, jogging around.

But she's so routine-oriented.  You could set your clock by her

Comings and goings. And she burns the midnight oil.

I wonder why? But hey, she's blond and kind of cute."

I thought, "Look at that tall man! The red hair!

Oh, he must be married, there's a woman over there.

He cooks on his grill, he drinks a lot of beer.  He plays his music

SO LOUD.  He probably has no ear drums left.

But I see how he watches the stars, and that he talks to people

Just because, and gee, it would be nice to have a friend, someone

Besides the teens I teach and the beloved teens I parent,

Someone who could make my heart do flip flops.

My heart, it's been dead a long, long time."

And he said, "Hello."

And I said, "Hi."

And it wasn't long before we asked,

"Where have you been all my life?

You are not me, but you complete me.

A puzzle piece, whether the first or the last,

Here we are, together. Amazing.
