THE BACH PRAYER, words adapted by Joel Sattler, music from Bach’s BOUREE

MUSIC: from the fifth movement

of the Suite in E minor for Lute,

BWV 996 (BC L166),

written by Johann Sebastian Bach.

WORDS: adapted by Joel Sattler from parts of

Matthew 6 and The First Epistle of John from the New Testament,

and The Child’s Prayer and the Hebrew Kiddush,

with some additions…..

---------------

Now I lay

me to sleep

pray the Lord

soul to keep

if I die

for I wake

pray the Lord my soul to take

If I wake

for I die

there’s no need

to ask why

to love God

reason be

enough

If my soul

flies away

I will be

blessed with grace

I will come

to the place

where the angels are embraced

As I lift

up my gaze

at the end

of my days

I will see

the light shine

above

Until when

we are dead

give us our

daily bread

and forgive

those who tres-

pass against

Make our en-

emy friend

we’ll not pass

here again

and in God

we do live

and trust

Lead us not

into sin

but for glo-

ry to win

for of thine

is the king-

dom forever

And deli-

ver our souls

to the glo-

ry as told

for the pow-

er is yours

ever more

Hallowed now

be thy name

earth and hea-

ven the same

both as one

kingdom come

will be done

Blessed be

thou o God

Lord of the

universe

Creator

of the fruit

of vine

As we’ve known

and believed

the love God

hath for us

he that dwel-

leth in love

has no fear of

And with fear

casteth out

there is no

room for doubt

and you’ll know

in your soul

God is love

My version is based on a recording by Cesar Amaro:
