Some Assembly Required

I do not want to bring bad news,
But there are rules that we should use.
These words you’re spilling on the page
Had best be put back in their cage.

You can’t just go and turn them loose-
There are directions for their use.
These words have meanings- purpose- fit.
Don’t spill them for the heck of it.

Prepositions, adverbs, nouns-
And definitions- these are grounds-
To pick and choose quite carefully-
If you are writing poetry.

I like your words, you aim to please…
But don’t dispense them with a sneeze.
They need a well taught crafted hand-
For meaning we can understand.

I just can’t say- you may not care…
Why else would you just spit them there?
Though never said- the scholar knows
When Emperors don’t have their clothes.

Hee! Hee! I know exactly what your talking about and you put it in a very amusing way. Great poem with a good message.

Meaning is loud and clear here, John!!! Personally, if I'm reading poetry I just don't get....I rapidly lose interest. Besides, if I don't "get" it....how can I enjoy it?

Not only have I "felt" this......I'm guilty of it as well!

I resemble that fellow. I run across poetry that, after I've read it, chastize myself because I don't "get" it. I guess I have written the same kind of poetry that others could not fathom. But this one spells it out and there is no misunderstanding. Gotta love it.
