I wrote a poem about him,
Just this past August;
An extremely heroic dog,
Who did not deserve this.
“The more one gets to know of men,
The more one values dogs.”
Alphonse Toussenel
Great sadness in my heart, today
This very courageous hero, is gone
Brought home, by a grateful soldier
His death in a shelter, horribly wrong
Target, was this heroic canine’s name
He saved soldiers’ lives, in Afghanistan
He wandered out of his new backyard gate
Picked up, and euthanized, by ungrateful man
The soldier who brought him home is devastated
His children, who now loved Target, in great pain
We are killing far too many dogs in America, today
Our penchant to euthanize, not to cherish, is very plain
And Target’s very tragic ending makes me sadly wonder
How and why we’ve lost our bond with man’s best friend
America’s shelters are overflowing, with left behind canines
And, we as a nation now rush, to bring all their lives, to an end
Please find it in your own heart to adopt a dog, before it, too, is killed
Please do not let your own canines wander, without some identification
The lives of thousands of loving and heroic dogs will tragically soon end
We very sadly have a very long way to go, to make amends, in our nation
Great sadness in my heart, today,
This very courageous hero, is gone;
Brought home by a grateful soldier,
His death in a shelter, horribly wrong.
And some people in our vast nation still wonder,
Why people like me, rescue them from the streets;
We very sadly know, the tragic fate that awaits them,
In many 'shelters' today, death – not respect, they meet.
