I wrote a poem about him,

Just this past August;

An extremely heroic dog,

Who did not deserve this.

“The more one gets to know of men,

The more one values dogs.”

Alphonse Toussenel

Great sadness in my heart, today

This very courageous hero, is gone

Brought home, by a grateful soldier

His death in a shelter, horribly wrong

Target, was this heroic canine’s name

He saved soldiers’ lives, in Afghanistan

He wandered out of his new backyard gate

Picked up, and euthanized, by ungrateful man

The soldier who brought him home is devastated

His children, who now loved Target, in great pain

We are killing far too many dogs in America, today

Our penchant to euthanize, not to cherish, is very plain

And Target’s very tragic ending makes me sadly wonder

How and why we’ve lost our bond with man’s best friend

America’s shelters are overflowing, with left behind canines

And, we as a nation now rush, to bring all their lives, to an end

Please find it in your own heart to adopt a dog, before it, too, is killed

Please do not let your own canines wander, without some identification

The lives of thousands of loving and heroic dogs will tragically soon end

We very sadly have a very long way to go, to make amends, in our nation

Great sadness in my heart, today,

This very courageous hero, is gone;

Brought home by a grateful soldier,

His death in a shelter, horribly wrong.

And some people in our vast nation still wonder,

Why people like me, rescue them from the streets;

We very sadly know, the tragic fate that awaits them,

In many 'shelters' today, death – not respect, they meet.

My God Ed, when will this country put life first as it says in the Declaration of Independence...

LIFE, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

It seems there is such an insatiable appetite for death whether human or animal and I sure wish it would stop....

Be always safe,
Karen

We treat metal, glass and plastic with more respect than we do living loyal flesh and blood.
Keep up this valuable work, Ed, some are listening and there will be more.
In solidarity.

And only a few month ago, I helped out to bring some of these hereos home, for those grateful soldiers that had a kind heart, this ending is so undeserved, so deeply and severely wrong, so abhorant, so terribly hurtful for this family, and the thousands more that lose their soul friends this way. It's the way we value life today, any life, and of course for the dog pound it was just a dogs life, in most cases value of their lifes irrelevant. As you know we don't blow the trumpet even for those creatures who served, and we don't bow our heads for them, may they in heaven all forgive us, for surely that is where they are, most likely lonely for human company, you gone have a lot of pooches around you when you get there.
Bless ya! Jasmin Horst

This is tragic!! What the *#!* is wrong with humanity???? Bless that precious creature......and the family who mourns him! Thanks for putting this out there, Ed. You give people reason to pause and look at what's happening around us....

So sad, yet so true. Keep sending your message Ed, people are listening. I detect more awareness about spaying and neutering today than in years past. That doesn’t seem to be your primary message, but it's helpful as well. Could this be one of the same “soldiers” that you wrote about earlier, perhaps one that was in the poem that appeared in my book? Dick
