For My Brother

A poem for an older brother.

It was always something, some new adventure that led us into your games.
It was "You're so short, I bet you can't reach over the pole in the closet"
We would, and you'd hand cuff us there.

Or it was the challenge, the competitive spirit which lead to so many,
"I'll bet I can tie you up in the closet and you can't get out", or the
"It's a rubber egg, it just smells like vinegar."

All those little tricks to show us there are surprises in this world.
All the little jests and hurts which bring a child from innocence
to maturity in a flash of inspiration.

But the newest adventure, this "equal relationship" with a woman which
Flies before our face with a visage of found love and compatibility
which surpasses all the others.

It bespeaks miles of breaking ground and a challenge to the future,
a competitive, "I've found love, what can you do?"  And she's so smart
and sweet and strong, you smile victoriously at us.

This is no game any longer.  This is life, the store of years worth.
There are no tricks, only honesty and hope and love.  And as always,
brother mine, you've come out a winner.

For your future life, your world, your peace, I wish you all the good
the world has to offer.  For your love, I wish you endless breaths of it.
And for you, dear brother, always, my love, respect, and envy.
