Christy, my 17 year old grand daughter,
stopped for a short visit, last week.
Half way out the door, she said
“You didn’t say you love me….”

I needed for her to know,
of all the things in her lifetime
which she might eventually screw up,
that is not one of them….

It’s just not possible!
You’ll never be able
to screw up badly enough
that Grampy would stop loving you.

That’s not to say you’ll never disappoint me,
or that I’ll always agree
with everything you do with your life.
Or, Visa versa… Nobody is perfect!

But, I want you to always remember,,,,

“You don’t stop loving someone
just because you disagree with them,
you don’t stop loving them,
just because they disappointed you.”

“Shit happens,”
then you move on.
So, what I say,,,,
is this…..

“I’m sure you’ve been upset
with your mom,
or with your dad,
but you didn’t stop loving them because of it.

We’re blood.... We always will be.
No matter where your life takes you,
always remember Grampy loves you.
And I know,,,, you’ll always love me.”

So, then I wrote her this poem

One day as she was leaving,
she said you didn’t say, “I love you.”
That’s always been our custom
and we both know that it’s true .
She’s my very first granddaughter,
my love has never wavered.
The feelings I’ve always had for her
are truly to be savored.
Occasionally we are occupied,
or have other things on our mind,
we might lose our concentration,
but there’s no intent to be unkind.
As she travels through her life,
there will be times of disappointment.
That’s a two way street,
as are our times of enjoyment.
“You don’t stop loving someone
because you’ve had a disagreement.
You don’t even stop loving them,
after their internment.
No matter where life takes her,
we’re blood and always will we be.
She’ll always know her Grampy loves her
as I know,,,, she’ll always love me.”
Life has peaks and valley’s
from which we must recover.
Yet, nothing she could ever do
could cause me to un-love her.

This is early Monday moring and I'm just now reading this poem, along with one that Paul B. wrote. Both are just what I very much needed this morning. What a beautiful granddaughter and how sweet and loving it was that she noticed that you didn't say you loved her. That speaks volumes all by it self about the love you have for each other. I wish I had the talent to express to my children and grandchildren how much I love as you do.

Honestly stated are your verses, Richard; and what they express is a fine gift for your granddaughter. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you,

these are so very beautiful! I agree, there is nothing my children or grandchildren could do to make me stop loving them and, believe me, they have tested that idea a few times!

The bonds we form with our children, grandchildren, and for some even great grandchildren are unbreakable and this poem expresses this well. When I see any of my children or grandchildren I know tht in my heart they could never be anything than loved no matter what.

Richard this is beautiful and true. We have twelve grandchildren and we have an UNCONDITIONAL love for them. That will always be, no matter what.

Christy is a lucky young woman to have you for a "Grampy."

You are a very loving grand pa and I wish my kids and grand kids would say I love you. You have a very special bond and may God always bless both of you and all your loved ones.

This is sublime! I think you have written something so special here, so connected on a deep level. I wish I had known my grandfathers. She's lucky to have you in her life, and to have the wisdom that you bring.
Be well,
