Carolina Clay
By La Belle Rouge

roots ran deep
in red carolina clay
we slept good at night
we worked hard all day
the tobacco grew tall
and the kids did too
our hearts were light
our worries were few

deep snow in winter
sultry summer sun
we waited for fortune
but fortune didnít come
so poor in growing up years
but in the hardest times
we just stuck together
and smiles outweighed tears

we tried to escape
to the big, bustling city
turned backs on the farm
ran away without pity
in a cold distant city
we were determined to stay
but roots ran deep
in red carolina clay

we missed the jasmine
and mamaís fried chicken
every day our ambitions
took a cruel licking
we thought about the farm
missing life as it had been
and we wished we could
go back home again

robbed of sound sleep
we turned and tossed
we were dejected, jaded
our innocence was lost
grieved when we remembered
the beauty of a better day
when our toes were caked
with red carolina clay

Nicely done Belle, looking back on days past.Childhood and farm life, I cant' think of a better combo,we all may not have grown up on farm but,we were all kids at one time. Childhood does evoke a special moment of time reguardless of how good or how bad we had it,,we were only a child once and your poem captures the beauty of the experience.

So beautifully in sync with both one's roots and aspirations, darlin Belle. How can we ever lose touch or feeling with or for the soil of our birth or ever give up hope of return? As others have said, you have picked the perfect poetic form for this: it sings! :)) HAPPY NEW YEAR! xx

Your unigue style, vividly touching descriptions and sense of opening up your heart and mind to your readers made this one of my all time favorites of yours. It truly made me want to someday see Carolina.

It is human nature to give up something we think is bad for something we think is good, only to find out that what we gave up was better. Hindsight is always 20/20, and wouldn't it be nice if we could see what would before we did it? Thank you for sharing and I love the song. HAPPY BEW YEAR!

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

I will save this poem, it has all the best and most wonderful sentiments, and if the picture is anything like your feelings, what beauty, and you did it justice with this memoir. You have thoughts similar to mine, I phoned my ancient little Auntie in them thar hills, but no answer, it made me think of my own home, that I left so many years ago. I shall post it, for you encouraged me, bless you!
You have a great New Years, and don't forget to send Santa home now, he must miss his own place, well maybe, Hugs! Jasmin Horst

Such a sweet memoir! Embrace the fond memories, but always live in the moment and enjoy what is going on all around you and don't miss out on any single moment.

I wish much health, peace, happiness and joy to you and yours this coming New Year. Have a Happy one!

Sometimes it pays to stay well grounded, so our roots can grow.

A bittersweet write of can't go back again. Touched my heart remembering our place at the lake, long gone. There's a good country song there.
