“I have been studying the traits

Of the so called ‘lower animals,’

And contrasting them with the traits

And the disposition of man.

I find the result humiliating to me.”

Mark Twain

Thinking about the past year

And the orphans that I’ve met

So many, abandoned and abused

Far too many, so sadly homeless yet

Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and guinea pigs

So many of them, purchased at some pet store

Then tossed out, like a worthless piece of garbage

This past year so horrendous, finding more and more

Almost every day last year, another extremely sad news item

About another cat and her kittens, tossed out of someone’s car

Or another telephone call, concerning a starving, dying, canine

Tortured by dog fighters, then discarded, bleeding, and scarred

Dogs that should be man’s best friend, so terrified

Un-spayed cats, unable to find food for their babies

Rabbits, birds, and guinea pigs, freezing in dark alleys

Because we human beings are so cruel, callous, and lazy

I can’t even count the number of abandoned pets found last year

And, I very sadly know, that this new year, we’ll find many more

Please help us, to help some of them, in these abysmally cruel times

Please consider adopting an orphan - they are right outside your door

Thinking about the past year,

And the orphans that I’ve met;

So many, abandoned and abused,

Far too many, so sadly homeless yet.

On This Extremely Frigid New Year’s Morning,

I Hope and Pray For a Better Year, For Them;

Our Human Cruelty, Callousness, and Neglect,

So Very Sadly, Just Never Seems, To Ever End.

Every time you write something like this dear older brother, you have no idea of the guilt I feel for not adopting a dog...but to be totally honest, money is very tight, & the dog would get fed before I feed myself...once I get back to working, then I will find an old mutt to adopt...so sad are all those pictures...Ed

THank you for being the ever faithful friend of animals. I don't have the place for any right now but I would like to find a shelter close here and help out. have a great new year

2011 may possibly be my year for adoption... I will never go down the pedigree route again... not when there are so many who have been literally "de-selected" by wanton and irresponsible owners. Thanks for keeping us ever-mindful, Ed, and for spurring us to action. Bless you and have a heart-warming start to the New Year. xx

Ed, again you touched that part, that eventually could lead humanity to be a more enlightened species, if it only looked a bit deeper than the common arrogant brain it carries on its shoulders, Mark Twain had it so perfectly right.
God bless you for caring, and sharing this wonderful morning wake, so well expressed. Jasmin Horst
