“I hope to make people realize how helpless animals are,

How dependent on us, trusting as a child must,

That we will be kind, and take care of their needs.

They are an obligation put on us, a responsibility

We have no right to neglect, nor to violate by cruelty.”

James Herriot

I got another sad telephone call

From a truck yard office woman

“We have a stray hanging around,

And we really hope you can help him.

“He showed up here two weeks ago,

So weak, that he could barely crawl.

Could you possibly drive on out here,

It’s so bitterly cold out now, after all.”

Several of us soon arrived out there

This truck yard dog broke our hearts

He was skin and bones, and terrified

This dog definitely needed a new start

We chased him around the yard for awhile

We tried to entice him with food and treats

So sadly, he has lost any trust he had in man

After several hours, we all left there in defeat

The next morning, I decided to go back there

This time, I brought one of my huge dog traps

I soon baited it with appetizing treats and snacks

And placed it where he would lie to take his naps

After only a few minutes, he smelled the food

His pathetic, starving, state, led him to the bait

Terrified Trucker is now fast asleep in my garage

I hope and pray, he’ll now let me improve his fate

But my heart is now breaking, as I watch him sleeping

He is half the weight, a Lab/ Hound like he, should be

He does not trust me yet, but I can’t say that I blame him

He hasn’t had very many friends; he has only known misery

But now in your caring hands he will soon come to realize this is a new beginning. It really is so sad because there are so many that need help and a loving, trusting hand.

OMG! What a sad story...God bless him....and you! Anyone who could discard a helpless animal should be dropped off in some desolate northern environment where they have to try and survive with one to give a damn whether or not they indeed survive! See how it feels! Human cruetly still shocks me....and God knows it shouldn't because there's so much of it around! Bless every animal on the face of this earth....they deserve so much better than they get a lot of the time...

Very poignant, Ed. My heart goes out to these dogs that have been betrayed so heartlessly by their (ignorant) human 'masters'. You have captured the sadness of his status beautifully in your words and it is comforting to know that he has found someone who finally cares, whether his doggie mind registers that fact or not at the moment. I am not a Christian (or even a religious person), but if I were, I would consider dogs (and all animals) as an absolute blessing to all human life. Creatures to love, respect and care for as humanely as possible. Individuals who callously abandon pets are (in my opinion) loathesome misanthropes, who whould probably be better off 'put down' themselves (not the poor animals they have discarded or otherwise treated with such abysmal cruelty). If I were the mythical Great Supreme Being, you can rest assured I would rearrange the existing 'priorities' of sentient life considerably and sentence culpable human miscreants who mistreat animals to that eternity of Hell that Christians are so fond of believing in!...
