...those were the daze, oh yes, those were the daze....

A broke down, bunged up cowboy
Was my uncle Bronco Jim
He used to bust green horses
‘til a big stud buckskin busted him
I recollect he lived on
The wrong side of the tracks
In an old wreck of a cabin
Behind Granddad’s clapboard shack

Sometimes the two of them
Would reminisce all day
They’d bitch about the good times
And some old rounder’s henhouse ways
Most days though they would sit and drink
Cheap likker like was water
Then pass out in the midday sun
As those summer days grew hotter

Bronc went to Cowboy College
Brutal lessons there he learned
He wielded a bazooka
Around him men and vehicles burned
He’d never been so god-damned cold
As he was in the Ardennes
Where knocked out armor froze in the snow
Along with his dead friends

We found my uncle Bronco Jim
One day in Gramp’s backyard
When he went dead , he went down
And went down very hard
Sometimes I think of Bronco Jim
The rough cut life he led
But I know that he is better off
Without the screaming in his head

Sounds your Uncle Jim still led a charmed life, as long as he got out of France alive, he was charmed...Ed

You did good Duke, great story.

The style may be easy and fluent and indeed light-hearted
but within that there is character both of the one
portrayed and of the poet.
Poignant and atmospheric, Duke.
Good to see you back.
