Photo: Wood Violets

“Look at us, said the violets blooming at her feet,

All last winter we slept in the seeming death,

But at the right time God awakened us,

And here we are, to comfort you.”

Edward Payson Rod

It differs, every springtime

But the Awakening, is grand

When the very first wildflowers

Now return here, to the northland

I never know the day it will occur

So, I keep picnic goods, in the car

When the glorious morning arrives

We are always ready, to travel far

“The Awakening has now begun!”

I shout out to my slumbering spouse

Even my dogs know what this means

As we all excitedly race out of the house

I always head north, up a peaceful country lane

As we watch the landscape waking from slumber

And, I usually end up, at a very tranquil little lake

On wooded shorelines is where new life likes to stir

And, if our timing is just right, we are all happily rewarded

With a most heavenly display, of gorgeous purple wildflowers

To me, there’s nothing more exhilarating than Spring’s Re-birth

Now, my spouse and I, and our canines, rejoice for several hours

It differs, every Springtime,

But the Awakening, is Grand;

When the Very First Wildflowers,

Now Return Here, to the Northland.

Last time I experienced this "sudden spring" was April 1983 in Vermont where I was working for a year; believe me it is not like this in Florida. Here it's spring into summer that is so startling (and unsettling) You make me miss the north...

Not the thunder of politicians or their wars
or the squawk of Spring Break
but the quiet beauty of Nature stirring again.
Your mind is so in the right place, Ed, right there
with your heart.

My favourite flowers, I just seeded some of the fragrant kind, into a window box space, see if they'll survive the winter, it's the sunny side of the house, the fragrance should bring happy thoughts at an open window. Nice thoughts of spring Ed, bless ya!
