Coffee, Bacon, Onions and Popcorn
The scent of perking coffee.
The scent of sizzling bacon.
The scent of frying onions.
The scent of popping popcorn.
Irresistible!
The scents of
perking coffee,
sizzling bacon,
frying onions and
popping popcorn
to me
have always been
irresistible.
Remembering!
As a child I remember
awakening every day to the early morning
perking sound of my mother’s
old fashioned coffee pot.
Though yet too young for coffee,
though many years before allowed coffee,
lying in bed I remember the delightful,
wafting scent of early morning coffee
that signified the start of each day.
Not on all days,
but as a child
on some days I remember
impatiently sitting at the kitchen table
watching my mother vacillate between
pouring coffee, cracking eggs
and turning the sizzling,
fat spatting bacon.
Remembering!
Remembering the mouth watering
scent of sizzling bacon
that signified the first meal of the day,
on some days…
Frying onions!
Other than always causing
pangs of hunger…
Really,
I cannot think of an
anecdote regarding
the scent of frying onions.
Well…
Other, of course, than liver and onions
which, way back then…
well, really,
what kid likes liver and onions?
Suffice to say, though,
the scent of frying onions
have always caused pangs of hunger.
Popping popcorn!

Saturday afternoon at the movies:
A quarter for admission;
a nickel for candy
and a dime for…
Handing the stub to the ticket guy,
passing into the theatre with
a nickel for candy and a dime for…
Hearing the “pop” “pop” “pop”
of the popcorn machine and,
Oh my, God!
The scent of popcorn popping.
A nickel for candy
and a dime for a box of popcorn.
Irresistible!
To me…
the scents of
perking coffee,
sizzling bacon,
frying onions and
popping popcorn
to me have always been irrestible.
