A land of hope and liberty
One to which many flee
But the grass this side is not as green
As those believe who seek the dream

Greed and excess come in between
It's you for you and me for me
A race to gather what you can
More excess than any man

People starving, losing their home
Caused by our dysfunctional syndrome
To hold more than any other
Many would forsake their brother

Houses taken, sold at auction
So they can regain a fraction
Getting a bit of currency
Ranks above their uncertainty

Don't count on me 'cause I don't care
Don't ask for help in your despair
To put more money in my hands
I'll send jobs to foreign lands

I don't see them on the street
As I'm out patrolling my beat
And if they should just disappear
I'll be much too busy to hear

There's a mistress called desire
As your wealth and fame grow higher
That even when you've reached that door
You'll still be left with wanting more

Out of focus, can't see straight
Awhile ago I was already great
No longer human, a black monster
Devouring others in insatiable hunger

Compassion has been left to rust
Empathy sits gathering dust
Love was thrown into the sea
Left to drown indifferently

How is it you feel pristine?
As you ride by in your limousine?
Watching the poor beg and suffer
As you eat a four course supper

They work for you, they built you up
They helped you gain all that you want
Your thanks to them is meager pay
Enough to barely get through the day

The rich get richer, the poor get poorer
As most discover to their horror
That doing something society requires
Will pay them little and make them tired

Some believe that this is right
You must have the strength to fight
If you don't go get your own
Then you'll be ground down to the bone

It's true you should follow your dream
But even if you serve coffee and cream
There's more than enough prosper and wealth
To spread it around and live in good health
