“Memory is a way of holding on

To the things you love,

The things you are,

The things you never want to lose.”

Kevin Arnold

I went to visit with my father

At our family’s cemetery yesterday

I still find it extremely hard to believe

It’s been 11 years since he passed away

I told him what’s been going on in my life

And all about all of our recent animal rescues

As I was about to get back in my car and leave

I looked up as a white-tailed deer came into view

I stood there very silently, gazing at this creature

As a flood of very vivid memories, returned to me

Memories of me, visiting this place, with my father

As a child, and all of the wondrous wildlife we’d see

My father would always stop his car, and admire them

The deer, the geese, and the family of foxes, living here

I recalled he told me they kept my grandmother company

And now, so many years later, I saw this magnificent deer

Even here, at this place of rest, so many didn’t like the wildlife

Through the years, complaints about the deer and the geese grew

And, because of all these complaints, exterminators had been hired

In the last several years, sightings of any wildlife, have been very few

And now, this wondrous deer and I, stood silently facing each other

I didn’t leave until this visitor finally decided to slowly saunter away

As I drove off, I felt a little better, and my spirit had now been lifted

Knowing both my father and grandmother still had his company today

You sometimes take my breath away with your beautiful and deeply meaningful words. I don't usually get emotional with the poetry on AD, but your loving poetry left me in tears. A loving tribute to the memory of your grandparents and the wildlife that you love.

Could it be that this deer was your Dad's way of showing you that ...

after death - there is still LIFE? a PURER, more natural one ... tk...

This is beautifully uplifting reflection even through the sadness, Ed!
A deer is a sign of a saint, and also a deer can be an after death communication. At least that is what I have read.

Christine

Thats a beautiful sentiment and the picture, right on, did you take it while you were there...I have a friend that when he visits his mom, he has a flock of starlings always there to greet him, he likes to think that they are his mom in a next life...Ed
