Even among other pugs, Olover was noticeably small. He was game though, even after a large dog bit his spine and Oliver had to through the rest of his life, three more full years, dragging his hindquarters behind him. Somehow, he always found a way to be in the midst of things. And he never gave up.

          OLIVER, a Pug

We called him “Small”
And his talents were immense,
Not the kind that awed you
But the kind that abided.
He sat on your lap and warmed you.
(No small thing, a Small thing)
He persisted through pain,
(No small thing, a Small thing.)
And taught us what dogged is.
(The quintessence of Small)
He never minded being last,
(No small thing, a Small thing.)
Yet he stood guard regardless.
(A very Small thing.)
We often may forget
When a small thing departs
But Small still guards his place
In the laps of our hearts.

What a lovely poem for your dear friend-animals are the best of friends, and losing them is like losing a member of the family. This was really touching to me as an animal-lover. I'm sorry for your loss, xx Michelle
