Sweet Carrie, Left Behind By Her Family,
Happily Spent Thanksgiving At Our Home;
The Story of Yet Another Abandoned Canine,
Very Quickly Inspired Me To Write This Poem
“If you pick up a starving dog,
And make him prosperous,
He will not bite you.
This is the principal difference
Between a dog and a man.”
Mark Twain
He was abandoned all alone in the woods
Forlornly wandering the forested hillsides
Not accustomed to foraging or to hunting
He collapsed from hunger and almost died
Luckily, a Good Samaritan found him there
And, he transported him to an animal hospital
The staff treated him, and returned him to health
And now, to an overflowing shelter, he would go
Animal shelter staff named this canine ‘Hercules’
And he languished there in a cage, for quite awhile
Then one day, a compassionate couple adopted him
This dog’s arduous journey had covered many miles
And all dogs are truly grateful, to those who help them
After only six hours in his new home, a burglar broke in
Hercules bravely responded and chased off this intruder
In his pursuit, he was able to bite this invader in the shin
I’m always inspired by the courage and the loyalty of dogs
They will always selflessly, come to the aid, of their friends
We can learn many lessons from dogs like brave old Hercules
Who, unlike many of us, will faithfully give their all, to the end
There just may be a very heroic canine like old Hercules
Waiting at a crowded animal shelter in your area, for you
Please consider giving one of them a Home For the Holidays
With all of the abuse they get from us, it’s the right thing to do
