“Always remember, Edju,

Swiety Mikolaj loves animals, too.”

My Polish Grandmother

Pulling out our Christmas decorations

I soon came across an old wooden statue

An old gift, given to me by my grandmother

And some marvelous memories came into view

As a young child, I always loved the Holidays

My Grandma celebrated ‘Swiety Mikolaj’ Day

This was her Polish name for good old St. Nick

And, she always celebrated his Feast Day, today

I was probably only about five-years old when she told me

That good old St. Nickolas loved both youngsters and animals

And she gave me an old wooden statue of St. Nick from Poland

Today, this statue is my most cherished Christmas decoration of all

I’ve realized my ardent love of animals and nature came from her

She absolutely adored birds, and dogs, and cats, and wild animals

She deeply respected and loved each and every god-given creature

And, because of her, today, of all God’s Creation, I am still, in awe

Just yesterday morning, as I took an early walk in the chilly woods

I paused in a clearing observing some deer, as did my loyal old dogs

I could now almost picture good old Swiety Mikolaj, just ahead of us

Lovingly feeding them, and talking to them, perched on an old oak log

Suddenly, besides the truly captivating bird song in the pine-scented air

I could hear my dear old grandmother whispering to a boy she called Edju

“I am giving you this statue of Swiety Mikolaj, and I want you to remember,

That for always, and always, and always, he’ll love children and animals, too.”

Pulling out our Christmas decorations,

I soon came across an old wooden statue;

An old gift, given to me by my grandmother,

And some marvelous memories came into view.

It is so wnderful to see how an item you have been by a loving grandma triggers such a sweet memmory of your childhood. If only i were as lucky as you to claim possession of an item dating back to the era of my loving parents or grandparents! I sswear this statue is a historical connection to your roots and a genetic trace of where your love for nature and animals have originagted from. Thanks.

What precious memories you have been given by your Polish grandmother. She taught you well and her spirit lives on in you today as you care for the animals that God loves. A beautiful story.
