Leaves

sometimes, at night
I walk the dark streets of Thibodaux
just me and my mutt
Zoe
my poets' inner concentration
allow me to hear
leaves on the trees
as they talk to me
no, of course they do not speak
but they do talk
when, in the wee hours of morning
city traffic almost nil
far off a dog barks
sensing Zoe
and possible trouble
wintertime and midnight past
the best time
to listen to the leaves
as I walk street after street
finding a good place
I stand still
Zoe sitting near my feet
I begin to hear
the gently rustling leaves
of ancient oaks
the strange needle-like leaves
on the odd-shaped
cypress trees
whisper to me in bits and pieces
of the leaves observations
since the first settlers
a red man's tribe were here
then came the French
and all the rest
I listen, as does Zoe
I feel small
within the company of ghosts

I love this Jerry, and identify completely with those enigmatic feelings whilst dog walking...We enter a world apart...and sense the past with its ghosts keenly....Excellent!

This has a special rapture as you make us feel connected first to you and Zoe, and then also to nature and to other times and people ~

Good one Jerry. That "small" feeling of which you speak is that of a compassionate man, appreciative of the many gifts afforded to those who remain fully aware of their surroundings. A collection of which surely includes you.

the leaves of trees absorb the atmosphere and nutrient from within hundreds maybe thousands of years of experience that has surrounded them ... ghosts do speak from within leaves ... i like the direction and execution of this poem ...

I used to run for miles and there is an area I loved running through that was a long stretch of beautiful trees on both sides. I'd take my time or even walk beneath the whispering trees just to listen. You brought back beautiful memories for me. Beautiful poem, Jerry ...

So few know of 'Love,' thinking they do. Here, without the obvious, without the cliche, love is spoken of with knowledge of its essence being all around us, object-less.

yes, leaves say so much... but returns often say more...

yes, leaves say so much... especially the impossible ones (you know, those that make you scratch... and forfeit your turn... and bring up one of your balls...)

yes, leaves yield high returns... if you have the balls to listen...

I sense you and Zoe have a tremendous rapport...

I can even hear the rustling leaves in this poem.... makes me want to wait until the rustling leaves...

May an early morning peace greet you throughout your hectic day...

Jerry so true, so true, I can relate to this. Trees are amazing creatures, they have seen and felt all of our history (the old one) and they do speak if you can really listen. My friend, you have done this, it is quite amazing isn't it...

Peace, love and light,
Amber
