“In everything in nature,
There is something of the marvelous.”
Aristotle
Music: Wild One
It’s a gorgeous March morning
I’m sitting at a pond with Turbo
Birds are chirping, all around us
Soon, it will be time for us to go
Suddenly, we hear a very distant splash
Turbo is now intrigued, and races ahead
When I finally reach him, down the shore
He is already gazing out, at a Bufflehead
What a winged wonder, the both of us now see
A male, stopping to rest, on his spring migration
He's winging his way northwest, from the southland
Seeing this one, has now brought both of us elation
Buffleheads are the smallest of America’s diving ducks
Their unique name, is derived from: ‘buffalo’ and ‘head’
Since a male puffs out his head feathers during courtship
These tiny ducks are monogamous, and for life, they'll wed
As I now begin to wonder why his mate is not traveling with him
We hear another splash, and a female quickly swims to his side
We now watch the two of them, enjoying each other’s company
Eventually, I wish both of them well, as they again, take to the sky
In everything in the natural world,
There is something of the marvelous;
I hope I can continue to marvel at it all,
Until my time on this planet is finally up.
