Garden of Youth

Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
Those times of carefree wonder,
reckless abandon, caution to the wind,
loving life to the fullest!
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
looking at life with rose colored glasses,
reading all your favorite trashy novels
till late in the night.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
challenging your parents,
thinking you knew more than them,
staying out beyond your curfew.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
listening to the Beatles behind your parents back,
wearing your skirts shorter after you got to school,
smoking in the bathroom.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
kissing the boys in their cars,
going just far enough to keep them interested,
knowing that one day you might have to put out.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
Thinking never about the future,
only living for that weekend dance,
or a drag on a friends cigarette.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
riding down the highway at the speed of light,
loving the danger of getting caught,
knowing you would be in big trouble.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
eating soft serve and the Dairy Queen,
never worrying about gaining weight,
wearing lots of mascara and pink lipstick.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
flirting with the bad boys,
feeling the thrill when they flirted back,
never really going with them, though.
Where did your Garden of Youth Go?
It was so long ago,
but now, I must water my Garden of Life,
and tend to my grandchildren and be happy.
This is where my Garden of Youth Is!
