If Face To Face
By La Belle Rouge

if I sat with you and we spoke face to face
what would we discuss….after long absence?
I know very little now about your daily life
and you have no real revelation about mine
it’s as if our hearts have become imprisoned
and perhaps it’s better that way, perhaps….
since all our summer flowers have frozen
in blustery autumn’s untimely, ample frost
and we both know that winter is at the door
waiting to cover us in the last drifted snow

if only I could be a few years older, colder
I could think of you as a glowing memory
and not as a bright, unreachable north star
all the elements conspire and loudly demand
“lie down and die,” I cannot obey their voices
for I have barely lived yet, no death so soon
oh there have been moments, days and years
too many of them to describe myself “young”
too many of them filled only with emptiness
and the struggle to survive my private war

if I sat with you and we spoke in a secret place
would I touch your hand, would you kiss my face?
would the embers ignite or would it be too late
to fan the fleeting flames of our doused desire?
would we have to endure a mundane conversation
or recall the joy of our hearts dancing all night?
would we speak of life, of dreams, of regrets?
would there be any need for inadequate words
after all the words unspoken, we have shared
heart to heart, soul to soul, where poetry lives?

NONE CAN DENY...WE ALL GO THERE, BACK...TO THAT PERSON THAT TOUCHED US SO DEEPLY. WE LINGER THERE A WHILE AND...WANDER. THEN WE COME BACK...LADEN WITH AN AWESOME PROSE WORK SUCH AS THIS, KNOWING THAT...THE WAY THINGS TURNED OUT? IT WAS ALL A PART OF 'THE PLAN'...AND WORTH IT. IN OTHER WORDS; I'M SO GLAD YOU WENT BACK TO VISIT 'IF'. THANKS FOR SHARING, POETESS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I have a theory that true lovers live only in the moment; we agonise in absentia but, face to face, it's like everything for always has, and always will be, forever shared. No past regrets, no future anxieties. Time is never water "under the bridge" between friends, but always "the bridge" between them instead. I'm sure it will be like one of you has just stepped out of or into the room for a mere moment "if, face to face" you were to meet up again - or even for the first time. But how I love your ponderings, Belle. On such I'm sure many of us have thrived over many long years past and present... As always, gorgeous. xx

Belle, you reached a very special place in my heart with this introspective rendering -- love, "love is handsome, love is charming, love is beautiful when it's new, love grows old, love grows colder, fades away like the morning dew" - face to face is the test of every love my dear friend -- you said it beautifully with your verse -- I wish you love and peace, Jon Michael

The "Ifs" in life crop up while we sit down after the dance and the music is over. It gives us time to reflect upon those days and nights spent in dreams that can never die.

This is a great poem, La Belle, the kind that can be written only if the deepest feelings create it. Superb, touching work!
