Animals In My Family Tree
At long last I was to bear a child
I pictured a daughter meek and mild.
But from the moment of her birth I knew,
That something was horribly askew1
My baby was completely covered in hair
And if that was all I would leave it there.
On looking closer, I could see
She had little paws where hands should be.
You can imagine my great surprise,
When I saw those gray feline eyes.
Then I remembered that secret book.
The one in which I could never look.
To my ancient Grandma I did go.
There were some things that I had to know.
She stroked my hair and began to purr
And for the first time, I noticed her fur.
Long, long ago in ancient days
Seems people had some magic ways.
Some had the power to change their shape
By wearing a certain dark, dark cape.
Only the wisest of the ancients knew
The secret of the cape of blue
‘Til one day the cape was found
By a pretty young lass dancing around.
How lovely she thought, it seemed to glow.
She put it on and I want you to know,
No longer was she in human form,
To her new life she had to conform.
On all fours now, she lived as a cat.
Sleek and fast, a blue-black wild cat.
She searched until she found one like her
Another human trapped inside that fur.
They fell in love and soon they mated.
A baby girl there love had yielded.
At last the curse they thought was broken.
This story my child is not fiction.
It is recorded in the secret book.
The one in which you could not look.
And every so often there is born a child
That still answers that call of the wild.
