Insomnia has many remedies, but few cures.

Limp Pumps

The Performers

    Hand extended
      Smiles all spread
            Nice to meet you
               Limp pump

    They were idols once
      My square box quarterbacks
Now but pushers of addictive promises

    Evil this
      A tub of temptation
         Floating duckies
            Boredom's parade of little thieves
               Escorts for the dying
                  Fraudulent comfort for the ill

Once a window to the world
      Now more a cloudy terrarium
A putrefying flotsam of wasteful dreams
            Rainbow wonders vexing
               Like cotton candy dissolving
Nourishing only its own phosphorus vacuum
                     Or flat screen liquid crystal

 The Audience

    Ben and Jerry pints
      Rest upon the chest
         Glazed eyes roll aimlessly
             Slurping spoonfuls of comfort
                To an indiscriminate appetite need

From the bright window of enticement
      Limp pump hands extend again
         3D smile all spread
"Have I got a pleasure for you"

    "No you don't"
      Dial flip
         Another media sleeping pill
            More success measured by consumption
      Dial flip
      Dial flip
      On and on

Like a beam of drifting illumination
         One's lighthouse grows dim
            Weariness as opiate induces
               More fog for the ignorant
                  Denser shrouding sends
                     Consciousness adrift

     Slumber's competition
        That limp pump encirclement
Brings smiles to your sleeping face
               You've had your nightly lesson
Proving the significance of lint in one's navel
                     Deserves more attention

 Sleep well
     Your infomercial nightcap

Oh my goodness. This is absoblinkinglutely smack on the testpattern bullseye. Here I sit with my V-8 juice, reading your visual waterfall of an anti-kiss-flavored poem. The "Evil this..." stanza is sublime. Every single word of it. The next stanza expresses my intense aversion to pharmaceuticals pimped to the wrong persons...better than I could have expressed it; not just written in purple-black passion, but black-black passion: "More fog for the ignorant". Guess you've written about the hotspot in society that I've described as "umbilical cords into the cable outlets." But I so like yours better. Wish this could be scrolled onscreen every six minutes instead of the purple pill. Thanks for writing this. I'm not alone. ~~ Diana
