The Night

a sleepy night...listening to the drone of lumbering trains
heavy trains...slow trains...full of coal...always at night
while owls hoot in the dark...a distant tug sounds its horn
all these night time sounds you listen to before sleep overtakes

the mind wanders through the night in its own fantasies
making stories from all the sounds heard in the dark
a world of make believe only the dark can produce
a world full of dreams and possibilities

the storms that hit fast...dropping their wet load...then disappearing
of thunder crashing...rain beating upon the rooftops...lightening flashing
all things that stir the imagination
keeping one awake...while the body begs for sleep

finally dropping off  into nether land as the silence takes over
the body wins its case...sleep for another night
so the day may start over fresh again...and the mind awaits for darkness to return
where adventures and dreams once more repeat their games

Love your phrasing in this one, Mary Etta! I guess we can all relate to sleeplessness...and how the mind creates images with every sound...

I can relate to this dream scene. Only this morning at 5 AM, it wasn't a dream but reality that found me on the floor, having fallen out of bed knowing it was happening. Never had that happen before and hope it doesn't again.
