I've spent many years
Working through
The flotsam of
A difficult childhood,
Learning to accept
And to forgive
Myself
And others
Who have damaged me.
Now I stand facing
The very center
Of my storm,
And such fear
As I have never known
Fills my heart
And my soul!
I don't want to look,
Don't want to grapple
With it,
Yet
Isn't that
What I've been doing
All along?
Trying to run away
And hide
Behind my crutches,
Only to fail
Miserably
Time and again?
The time has come
To meet the past
And to put it to rest.
The time is at hand
For laying aside
My worthless defenses,
For stepping out
Of my uncomfortable zone,
For embracing
The whole
Of who I am.
The time has come
For my own declaration
Of peace.
