Over the last few weeks I’ve been posting installments of a fictional poetic saga titled “WANDERIN & WONDERIN.” The five most recent installments of that saga were not of a poetic nature and have therefore been posted as “ARTICLES.”

One of the characters in that portion of the story is named Becky. These are her words.

MISSIN  MOM

I was still a young’un
when my Momma passed away
but I still think about her
each and every single day.

She taught me what she could
in the short time that we had,
but life kept on movin
leavin little time to be sad.

My dad and my two big brothers
all needed lookin after,
my life without my mom
didn’t bring a lot of laughter.

My daddy always worked
as did both my brothers
I’d a worked too
if’n I’d a had my druthers.

But lookin after the house
became my full time job,
figurin out between Peter or Paul
who’d be the best to rob.

My Daddy drank a lot
after my momma died,
seemed he jist couldn’t stop,
could be he never really tried.

Both of my big brothers
took up the habit too.
the three of them had little left
when it came to buyin food.

Somehow we still managed
and I began to build a stash,
each time they’d fork it over
I’d withhold jist a little cash.

I knew one day I’d be leavin,
I wanted to be packed and ready,
so I stocked up on what I’d need
takin it slow, but steady.

Two days after my graduation
while they were all away
I hopped on a Greyhound bus
with no idea where I’d stay.

The bus was heading West
that was all I really ever knew
no idea where I was headin
or what it was that I might do.

I’d been gone less then a week
when finally I called back home.
My Daddy was really a wreck
worried bout me bein alone.

I told him I’d be jist fine,
my mom had taught me well,
likely you’ll not hear from me
I may be gone fer quite a spell.

I got some wanderin to do,
lookin fer who I was meant to be,
but when my wanderin is over,
I reckon I’ll still be me.

I’ll check in now an agin,
but don’t put me on no clock,
I may go round the world,
or maybe jist round the block.

Fer months I had me a hankerin
to do myself some travelin,
so I decided to get away
before my plans began un-ravelin.

Tell the boys I love em
an I’m sure there’ll come a day,
when I’ll find the words I need
to say the things I need to say.

Bye Daddy, I love you.

“I was still a young’un
when my Momma passed away
but I still think about her
each and every single day.”

I like what you've said very much. Sometimes enough is enough and you just HAVE to get out and find yourself. Very wise....

Your story more than rhymes well, it makes good sense. The start of a great adventure for a green kid who could make it because she's fiction. She meets the Wanderin' Man?

You have a talent for building a character that ends up in our hearts. Well written, Wanderin Man.

I lost my own mother when I was in my early twenties. I think because of that I can relate to a lot of what your character expresses in your poem. A family needs a nucleus to revolve around be it a Mother, Father, or older sibling. Sounds like she became that nucleus until it wore her down.

On the road, I imagine adventure awaits her.
