For a friend that is facing the inevitable

___________________________________________________________________

When Inevitable

When there is an inevitable situation,

when life is ending

or decisions must be made to allow end of life

with the outcome inevitable,

when there is no choice

when there is nothing to be done,

nothing to be accomplished

when life is in the process of leaving

with all options exercised,

with all medical procedures accomplished,

what to do?

Heart aching,

mind reeling,

yes, heart aching,

yes, mind reeling

truly, though,

with all options exercised,

with all medical procedures accomplished

what else to do but accept,

what else to do but accept the inevitable.

knowing but one related,

having no personal knowledge

nor knowing anything

of the one near death.

Of course one might then say,

having no knowledge of the one near death

acceptance easy,

of course accepting the inevitable

easily accepted as,

other than the pain inflected upon my friend,

though sorry

I feel no pain for this one,

this stranger near death that I do not know,

however the pain my friend feels,

sensing the ache in her heart

I do feel her pain,

but yet,

When there is an inevitable situation,

when life is ending

or decisions must be made to allow end of life

with the outcome inevitable,

when there is no choice

when there is nothing to be done

Inevitable.

One must accept the inevitable.

Yep. I question some of the end of life heroics done to extend misery. Makes no sense. Patrick

I read this poem just after my mother's youngest brother died. I was very close to this uncle, so I could relate intensively to your words, which touched me at the deepest level. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings in this forum.

So true. The inevitable will come to us all. My only wish is to prolong it until my work is done and then allow it to happen as it always does. The living should not spend endless time grieving but should move on, but that is the way life is.

I read this twice Mark as it brought back memories of my Mom and Dad and the decisions they made before passing away...both accepted the inevitable with grace and dignity which I guess given that kind of circumstance I wonder if I could be so brave.
