Communication with nature and seeking answers from her is still alive and kicking in Finland!

My mother used to tell me
About the cuckoo bird
How it answered her query
Of when she was to marry
While she went walking
Through the woods
In Finland by a lake

Still a single young lady
Dreaming of wedding bells
Began speaking aloud then
Asking the cuckoo bird when
Would she get wed to
A true love
And they a fam'ly make

She waited for her answer
Within the forest still
Hoping not to be forsook
Hearing a soft "cuckoo-cuck"
Wondering what this
Sign did mean
Back home she made her way

One and one half year later
She sailed aboard a ship
On her way to a new land
With merely one trunk in hand
On Canada's shore
Her new home
Was where she planned to stay

It happened that a young man
From the United States
Of Finnish blood he was too
Smitten by her eyes of blue
Asked for her hand and
She said "yes"
Their wedding vows they took

Remembering when she asked
The bird when she would wed
Bird gave accurate answer
One year and one half later
Equals the call the
Cuckoo gave
'Twas full "cuckoo" then "cuck"!

Nice story Jane. I tend to think that when people ask for a sign, nearly anything that happens next can be considered as that sign and can often be interpreted in whatever manner they choose. That said however, I think "BELIEVING" is the important part of that equation.

What a wonderful story in this poem. Yes, cuckoo birds are wiser than owls.
