“I’m like a shooting star,
I’ve come so far;
I can’t go back,
To where I used to be.”
From Disney’s Aladdin,
A Whole New World
Homeless, his entire life
He was always on the run
He only knew man’s cruelty
But now, those days are done
He discovered the joy of having ‘stuff’
He now loves his cozy little dog house
Recently, he’s begun playing with toys
A rabbit, a duck, and a squeaky mouse
And I laughed so hard when he grabbed it
He decided he wanted my camping pillow
He also drags around his favorite ‘blankie’
A whole new way of life now, for Shadow
He also decided that he likes being petted
Wearing a collar now, provides him security
My dogs all like him, and he likes all of them
It’s been quite a journey, for Shadow and for me
Just yesterday, he decided that it was now finally time
To join the rest of his canine brethren in our backyard
A whole new world, is now waiting for him out there
He is leaving his past, which was so lonely and hard
I sometimes had my doubts along his difficult journey
But patience, understanding, and kindness, usually win
The once feral, fearful, distrusting, doubting, dog is gone
A brand new Shadow has emerged, his new life now begins
“A whole new world,
That’s where I’ll be;
A wondrous place,
For you and for me.”
