no lie

I—am an honest man
I—despise a lie
For any reason,
Any reason at all—
Except—
Perhaps to save the feelings
Of someone you love…

…And there are times, you know
When it just doesn’t matter—
When no harm is done
Or the harm is so small
And the benefit so great
That a lie is ok
I mean, then it’s hardly any lie at all.
No lie, no?  Yes, then yes—
I—am an honest man

We all tell lies, as evidenced by this little poem. And, we lie to ourselves about telling them so that we can think we are totally honest, when we manipulate the truth of it to make our relationships better–we think.
