I enjoy the mornings at the beach here on the North Coast of America. My imagination takes wing!

Sydney the Seagull circled o'er
The waters of Lake Erie
Searching for a certain fine fish
Who's name was Perry Perch

Now Perry fed close to the shore
Each morning and Syd knew this
He'd fly low casting his shadow
As he for Perry searched

Perry was mindful of this sign
Would swim to deeper waters
Syd then would soar to greater heights
Scanning the lake below

Syd's eyesight wasn't all that good
Sometimes things looked quite blurry
He was so vain he didn't want
Other seagulls to know

One day a lone lost Northern pike
Swam into Perry's waters
Syd swooped on down to take a look
And figured Perry grew

Syd soared higher and higher still
Then dove straight down to capture
The fish he thought was Perry Perch
Oh if he only knew

Syd hit the water going deep
The Northern pike was startled
Opened his mouth of razor teeth
Snapping down on Syd's beak

Quickly retreating Syd escaped
Nefandous fate unnerving
He flew to shore scavenging for
Some dead carp which did reek

Some children saw him walking 'round
And gleefully threw popcorn
That they were having as a snack
And on this Syd did dine

Syd lost his taste for fish that day
Aquiring a new penchant
Perry the Perch feeds near the shore
The pike is doing fine

Quite a tale of bird's plan gone bad. We used to go fishing without bait. When we got to the river, we'd dig for a worm or catch a cricket or grasshopper, and then go fishing. Very soon we would catch a small perch. Hooking the perch under its dorsal fin, with a big bobber, we'd let the perch swim. If all went well, after some time, we would see the bobber moving around and we would let it until it would pop under and take off. Then we knew we had a northern on and would set the hook. After a brief fight, we would take home some fresh fish for mom to fry. Yummy!

Nice one Jane. In fact, with some editing to get it down on a kids level, I think it would make a great childrens book. Dick
