Looking up the hill there's a mansion there.
The lady, she always has nice clothes to wear.
She looks down on me with my ragged dress~
I look a sight with my hair all a mess.
I am just an old woman trying to survive~
Eating just enough to keep me alive.
No money for food....just trying to get by.
No money for heat..I'm so cold that I cry.

The kids have all husband is dead...
Had a heart ailment the doctor said.
No one around to talk to anymore...
No one ever knocks at my door.
No one to help.....No one to care...
The claws of coldness is always there.
The rich lady has her house all aglow....
I don't even have a lantern to show.

It's getting colder more blankets to cover me..
The edge of fear hovers near..won't let me be.
Hunger thunders inside like a piercing knife-
Threatening to steal the labored breath of life.
Day turns to night...everything is so dark..
Never felt so much's razor sharp.
I'm getting numb...I can't take this much more..
Wrapped up in blankets..curled up on the floor.

Headlines in the paper ..just the next day...
The rich lady reads it ...she don't know what to say.
A small article, but dark and bold..
Old Lady Dies From The Cold.
So busy with bridge clubs and trips to the shore..
She had no time for the lady next door.
Wrapped in her money blind to see..
A lonely old woman's tortured plea.

Let's check on our elderly. In the summer make sure they have air , and in the winter heat. Many are on a fixed income and their money just don't pay all the bills. Love works miracles and can save a life.

I want to thank Trappernicus for giving me this idea in his comments on my poem..Voice of the Homeless. Thank You!

Very well said Mom.If we don't take care of our elders, how do I have a defense for my favorite quote? "Let us before we die, gather up our heritage and offer it to our children." I took care of my grandparents for years before they passed and plan to do the same with my parents. But, we all should remember that alot of elderly are alone without family, like me. Let us remember the holiday's are coming soon. Many of our elders will spend it alone. Have you ever visited someone in a nursing home? I promise, it will make your day.

Dear heart the photo says it all! You can almost see what she is thinking. This is wonderful as always Linda Mae. Your empathic skills are woking well. Want a good laugh? Read my "Pussy Galore" ... It stated out to be dirty but became a very creative effort. And when you finish, click on the Link below and listen to the music for it. You are a wonderous Lady. You are always in my heart. Bill
