In the tempest of emotion
my heart was tossed aft and fore,
like a vessel on the ocean
when the winds are at war.
Dimly, through the climatic confusion,
there appeared a nearby shore;
it was a welcome transfusion
to my heart, battered and sore.
When the storm subsided
(like a lover quite content),
I anchored near the land I’d sighted
—which was you, my continent.
Lifeboat lowered, I grew excited . . .
with strength renewed to the oars I bent;
with the urgency of my passion ignited
I splashed ashore, breathless and spent!
