Could Not Last

Eyes flutter up and quickly back down.
Glimpsing into your eyes, but not holding your gaze,
vague shyness and uncertainty, holds his mind captive.
He does not know if he can trust you.
Such is the cautiousness of his ways.
He has been down the same road before,
losing his sense of direction along the way.
No longer does he trust his own feelings.
Does not give away his well hidden secrets,
until he sees all is perfectly laid out before him.
His trust is guarded, his privacy sealed.
Using an invisible suit of well-worn armor,
stretched across his chest to protect his heart.
He will not hold a gaze that may belie his inner self,
until his instincts tell him that your loyalty is true .
