Mirroring the headline's conundrum of freedom and captivity is challenging. From "Big Screen" divorce to "Big Mouthed" politics, interesting how the sameness overlaps.

LIFE'S WATTAGE

City Life

She strides about the streets
blaring nails
clackity lifts
abyss-sized glasses

Celebrity Life

He hydroplanes reality
exploiting sheer bravado
lending less credence to art
self-satisfied by rag paper coverage

Working Class Life

Shelved among village store musts
sandals await saved-for expenditure
unfolded from knotted kerchief
coins slid humbly from hand to cash drawer

Everyone's Life

Once embraceable
that dynamic evolutionary ladder-rung whole
now risks extinction
beneath the heat of over-load

What degree of power is needed
to remain of Nature's pride
to tame animal prowess gone awry
to guide balanced flow ever-constant?

A child's hand

How gentle the grasp
how fortunate the warmth of security
how fleeting this small example of energy's current
when next is thrust the gun to their hands
or the vest to obliviion

A plume of smoke
a mushroom of energy
a risk of sandless hourglass

Life's third-rail continues
what new movement awaits its appetite?

"...the sameness overlaps." How refreshing that is. I like the correlary "wattage" and "hydroplanes reality" (such an acutely perfect way to express 'skimming') and the use of "rage paper coverage" gives the notion of the tatteredness that goes with the word 'rag'. "Working Class Life" segment gets the blue ribbon in how it made me feel reading it: "village store musts" "unfolded kerchief" and the slow-motion, beautiful image of "coins slid humbly from hand to cash drawer." I've been that hand taking from the kerchief, and you KNOW, to be able to say this. "ladder-rung whole", "animal prowess gone awry" that is so very us and I'm afraid U.S. In "A child's hand" segment -- well, that gave me the hint that the security was flowing 'from' the child and then to place the gun winds directly into that "sandless hourglass", with it all ending with questioning what new movement awaits. This is a mural of a writing, to stare at a very long while. ~~ DIana

“I read the news today… Oh boy, the British army had just won the war!” Your poem reminds of that classic Beatles tune, “I am a walrus!” Everything is media today. And it is amazing how repeating the same old boring story is as though we really wanted to hear what a political party has to say on the fiftieth day of campaigning, or what an actor, getting divorced, had for breakfast. "Life's third-rail continues what new movement awaits its appetite?" Will mankind learn from the last big boom that takes out most of civilization? I don't think so. We are too selfish, greedy and maintain bad memories of the past lessons we should have learned.
