wind whips at her tatteredness
like a stain of her own undoing
she tries for a haughty pose
even though, with each step it is apparent
she's dying gradually
with practiced deft steps
she makes her way through the un-kept rabble
the jeers and howls
maintaining a dignity she thought she'd forgotten
her face smiled, then cracked
it'd been so long
something about the old woman
I saw an outpouring of gentle breeding
she measured the faces of those around her
trying to smile, but smile gone now
replaced by an absolute wanting
she needed, at that moment in time
for someone, anyone, to just speak to her
her eyes found mine
and in them I saw such a great need
I would converse with her
no matter that those passing us by
would consider my conversation with her
as a societal  faux pas

I love this - I think you know why! You capture much with a few well chosen words and create the entire contextual background as the lines play out. Thanks for this.

I love that you are so comfortable going against the grain. I can just hear you saying, "faux pas my ass, I make my own rules."

each line of this palpitates with emotion...quieting each heart reading it, to stop and recall missed opportunities to look into eyes and recognize the 'need' in them and act with compassion. so nice jerry.

The world is enhanced by your 'frequency-holding' power in the form of these written gifts of yours: "like a stain of her own undoing" - "she measured the faces of those around her" - "and in them I saw such a great need". To read insightfulness such as this makes just that many more of us mindful of sightfulness. Thank you. Respectfully, ~~ Diana

Compassion is such a beautiful thing Jerry, I know you have a compassionate heart. For at one time or another we have all had our wants and needs only wishing for a kind soul to give us a moment of their time. And of course caring not what others may think. This is true love and compassion written beautifully as you observe what this poor soul has gone through. Observation, understanding, for those in need.

Just wonderful again, as always you pen everything so well and in depth of meaning.

What a great observation as if watching a movie in slow motion, revealing every single detail.
Societal "faux pas" or not, of course you have to converse with her.

Sublime again Jerry
