"Don't say women are dull and not heroic. I've come east alone, riding the winds for a thousand leagues. My poetic imagination ranges far and wide, as freely as a sailboat on an open sea.”... Qiu Jin, poet, essayist, feminist and revolutionary martyr…

A brilliant but stifled talent; Cai Wenji was a poet/composer from the Han Dynasty

A portion of her works - "the eighteen laments" - is available through Google Books.

in remote green mountains,
a vague sound of distant flutes
drift within a lingering rain

gently a lotus flower opens
as it is touched by
slivers of warming sunlight

reaching for what is,
for what is hoped for,
for the unseen,
without end, waiting to taste
the one word of always;

beggars in
shadowy rags seek
to inhale the freshness
of peach blossom pools, where
life is lighter than a cloudless heaven, and,
where one woman’s work lingers yet in
a scent of jasmine

this is pretty to imagine the flute so softly against the rain, so glad you shared this r.

I can picture the landscape, the sights and the sounds of a quieter time when a woman's muse was not appreciated.

Richard ~
Unique her beauty as the distant notes of the flute charmingly intrigues the heart. Your poem portrays majesticly as a butterfly flutters to the lotus flower and peach blossoms. The essence
of Jasmine sweetly pure as a pearl.

Lovely sentiment for an artist that continues giving as the younger set learn--not by coercion to sit through an art class, such as in too much America, but through love of embedded cultural appreciation and youthful aspiration. As happens so often with Eastern poetry, they are able to address common elements, i.e., lotus and peach blossom, and avoid any semblance of sentimentality and the Hallmark syndrome. Thank you for the poem and the reference.

I think magnificent, but it seems too heavy a word for lines that altogether are "lighter than a cloudless heaven." May I just echo Roger's compliments below? Amazing writing, Richard!

...delicate, exotic, quixotic and calm... these lines vista forth an array of endless horizons... solid as they are sensual... evocative as evanescent highlights on an Asian eyeliner... rare and radiant, redolent of riches amid the penury of a perchance hand extended in a foreign land... fine form, friend... fine form...
