“I know well enough that there have been dogs so loving
That they have thrown themselves into the same grave
With the dead bodies of their masters;
Others have stayed upon their masters' graves
Without stirring a moment from them,
And have voluntarily starved themselves to death,
Refusing to touch the food that was brought them.”
Miguel de Cervantes
Sadness fills my heart today
My beloved old aunt is gone
Thankfully, I was there with her
When she left for the great beyond
And so was her loyal old canine
Her Daisy, refused to leave her side
I had to drag her away from her master
As my aunt’s remains were carried outside
The look of immense sorrow in her eyes, evident
Her efforts to go with my aunt, so stoically valiant
If I hadn’t restrained her, she would have followed
No matter where her beloved deceased master went
Some claim that animals do not share our emotions
I believe that they grieve, as deeply as we humans do
I know that they feel joy and sadness and love and loss
My aunt’s faithful companion now feels immense grief too
I promised my aunt that I would now care for her Daisy
But I sadly know that her life now will never be the same
Since yesterday, Daisy has refused to eat or drink anything
My heart breaks for her, I can feel her great sorrow and pain
