There is power in prayer. Prayer power is the
greatest power in the universe for achieving
celebrating, experiencing and influencing God
to act supernaturally on our behalf. Alfred,
Lord Tennyson spoke well when he said,
"More things were wrought by prayer than
this world dreams of."
"Hezekiah prayed and God added fifteen years
to his life."1 "Jabez prayed that God would
enlarge his territory. So God granted him
what he requested."2 Jesus prayed, "My
Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be
taken away unless I drink it, may your will be
done."3 Jesus said "...when you pray... pray
to your Father."4
In order to have an effective prayer life a person
needs to address his prayers to God. Even a
child when asking for a favor directs his
request to his parent. Yet, some people attempt
to pray without addressing their prayers to God.
Responding to this request of a disciple who
said "Lord teach us how to pray," Jesus said,
"When you pray, say 'Our Father'"5 This is the
manner which we are to begin our prayers.
To pray effectively, we have to pray in the Spirit.
"Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds
of prayers and requests."6 God is Spirit and he
who prays to him must pray in the Spirit.
Another reason to pray in fhe Spirit is
because the Spirit intercedes on behalf of
the praying person as indicated in this
Scripture: "We do not know what we ought to
pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
with groans that words cannot express. ...the
Spirit intercedes for us in accordance with
God's will."7 When we pray in the Spirit our
prayers reach the heart of God. How do we do
this? ... In all your ways acknowledge him, and
he will make our paths straight."8 To
acknoweldge God in all our ways is to "Pray
continually."9 To live in the Spirit is to live in prayer.
It is important to pray verbally whenever possible,
even when you are alone. Jesus said "When you pray,
"say... ." In Creation, God said "Let there be light."
We need to hear ourselves pray, because when
we pray aloud we see ourselves more clearly. We
too, like John, can proclaim with a shout: "On the
Lord's day I was in the Spirit."10. The Psalmist
recognized this truth when he said, "This is
the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and
be glad in it."11
