A horse is a horse, of course, of course; but a quarter horse is a heart/lung machine born to sprint

Photeau (c)2012/duke larance

He trotted smartly down the road
I could not hold him back
Then he got all wound up
when he saw the railroad track
I braced myself and just said, “Go”
I loosed up on the reins
He exploded right into a sprint
as if to catch the train

I wuz always more than craven
but that’s not why I cried
The world went rushing by so fast
that tears streamed from my eyes
I never nudged him in the flanks
he never felt a bit
He galloped gladly through his life
for the sheer joy of it

Now when I think about big buck
a tear comes to my eye
Tho’ not from any rushing wind
that’s not the reason why

You had me thinking this is present tense, until "He galloped gladly through his life". Then, by the finish and settle out with this poem, I returned to the 'present' of it. There is a burst of feeling with these lines; "as if to catch the train" which carries unbridled spirit and a catch in my throat. This line: "The world went rushing by so fast" and its dual meaning is charged with feeling and depth. I think no painting or picture could create a better portrait, Duke. Thank you for sharing this. ~~ Diana

"He galloped gladly through his life
for the sheer joy of it"
for me, Duke, the pivotal moment in this
lovely poem - fulfilling his nature,
what came naturally to him, that elusive
sheer joy i've spent so much time and effort
finding and expressing in my own little lfe.
You grow and grow, my friend, and this is a deep
pleasure to read
