As Hurricane Isaac now bears down on New Orleans,

I remember the one named Katrina, so vicious and mean

“One need not be a chamber to be haunted,

One need not be a house;

The brain has corridors surpassing

Material place.”

Emily Dickinson

August 28, 2005

Seven years have now passed

And I still remember their pain

So many of their lives, and mine

Will never again, ever be the same

I had planned to travel to the Gulf Coast once

But many of us realized we couldn’t stay away

I ended up journeying down there four times

And most of my memories are still vivid today

This truly horrendous storm took far too much

From too many souls, that most horrendous day

May one like her, never come stalking them, again

May none of them ever again, be so forgotten this way

It has now been estimated, that nearly half a million

Companion animals were left behind, in this hurricane

We eventually managed to rescue about 15,000 of them

The rest were lost, in the howling wind and merciless rain

Those surviving, forced to somehow fend for themselves

And, it was the haunted look, in far too many of their eyes

That will live on in my mind, for the rest of my natural days

That still make so many of us who went there, still want to cry

But I also have some extremely fond, everlasting, remembrances

Of extremely dedicated rescue volunteers, from all over our planet

Who helped each other cope with the horrific images we all beheld

Renewing our vows, to never take our earthly neighbors, for granted

Now seven years later, I still have three Katrina survivors in my home

Who remind me every day, just how precious companion animals are

And very often, I have to wake the three of them, from their nightmares

For all four of us, no matter how much time passes, this storm is never far

I’ve Linked One Of The Katrina Pet Rescue Videos Below;

My Memories Are Vivid, Even Though It Was 7 Years Ago:

i am so thankful for you and others who have the heart to rescue pets left behind, and for congressman lantos whose legislation today means if people are rescued their pets are too.

it was good to see pets being taken in the same boats as their companion human

My cousin Melanie is still rescuing dogs in Mexico, on a flight now to take 2 dogs to a home in Canada. This morning she posted this plaque... "Saving one dog will not save the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever" she started a fb page...'beach dog in mexico' so thankful for people like you and her!

it's so sad they were lost from their family
and yet so many were then saved!! & it is true
what Ron said they do have to choose human life
over the animals. It is a very hard choice to make.
I would more than likely die with mine, and let them
save someone else who has children. I wouldn't be
able to emotionally leave them :(

Yes, the memory lingers of the terrible travesty placed on so-called, “pets,” as some kind of disposable commodity in a disaster. At least here in Houston they now allow you to take your animal with you to a shelter and then the animal is placed in a nearby, separate shelter for animals––or at least that's what they say they will do. I think, in the end, when it comes to human life, they will always leave the animals behind.

I hope you don't have to come to the rescue this time. My thought is that a category five in the Gulf is entirely possible and has happened before. Is anyone prepared for that?

My daughter, Vanessa has Orlando a chocolate lab that was rescued from Katrina...We love him so much and he is such an amazing dog. He saved her life for at the time she had lost her soul mate in a car accident. Orlando's love and affection made my daughter whole again. We owe a lot to that Katrina victim..God bless you on your mission.

Peace, love and light,

Well done, none of us has forgotten Katrina
My hope is all fair well and safe, and of
course for all the little animals not in a
household their destiny again and fate I
fear will not be good.

So sad....when I first heard about Isaac bearing down on New Orleans...I couldn't help but think about the poor helpless animals that will suffer...I pray Isaac isn't as vicious as Katrina was....
