One of my earliest; one of my best. The photeau is new. Photeau (c)/2012/duke larance

I’m havin’ dreams and visions still

From the day I climbed that hill

That rocky summit still beckons me

Tho’ perilous and steep the climb

Below, the bed of ancient sea

I must go back time after time

I’m always havin’ visions and dreams

That old butte is not what it seems

At the very top of promontory

The southwest wind repeats the story

That ancient song of Eternity

Scares and haunts and exults me

So I keep on havin’ dreams and visions

To break out of society’s prisons

Again I’m climbin’ to the top

I’m gettin’ tired but I can’t stop

The roar and whistle of the wind

Sings out that age-old song again

The sunrise from the top of the hill

Gives me dreams and visions still

When Creator calls me near

Lay me in that cave up there

See the full moon o’er the Backbone set

You’ll never be able to forget

The view from high up on that hill

Those Dreams and Visions haunt me still

You're at the height of you poetic ambitions, Duke! Soaring at zenith! Push forward. Strong words and celebrated Dreams and Visions. Upper tier poetry with majestic thought...marvelous!

Duke,
this reminds of what Mallory said
when he was asked why climb Everest -
'because it's there'
your vision here is exceptional, far-reaching
and deeply spiritual

I like the curve of mystery wrapping around this poem. Your treatment of the allure delicately keeps the 'secret' from us about what it is that scares and haunts and exults the narrator here. Advancing that curiousity is "That old butte is not what it seems". Reading this makes me want to know those dreams and visions, and at the same time, makes me respect this voice's privacy of some place so sacred as to wish it to keep the expired life form. That is big. Big. ~~ Diana

I can hear the flutes in the background, playing that old song. There certainly is something mystical when one reaches heights, looking down on the earth from a new perspective in the cool, clean air. May your visions come true.
