My eldest son Ben, previously referred to on this site as "Hummingbird" is in the hospital for "Transient Gobal Amnesia". Basically, the inability to make new memories. They have run all kinds of tests for his brain and now are checking out his heart thoroughly, which, news to me, can effect the ability of the brain to function to that extent. The poem refers more to his piossible mental departure, and I know it sounds negative and self centered, but it is 3:30 in the morning and so much has happened this year I just felt like whining a bit. With God on our side and a loving family we will be fine. I think everyone has been in the self pity pit if only for a short time. God Bless us all.

A Mother’s Selfish Plea

Sometimes I feel like a plague,
visited upon my own heart this way.
Illness and death of the ones I love
fits star crossed family like a hand in glove.
I am waiting for the next, or current I should say,
victim to be sentenced by the doctors today.
Please, I don’t want to lose any more dear hearts.
Hummingbird don’t fly away even before I depart.
Be strong to worry and enchant me for many more days
And decades too, if the Lord be willing, okay?

Thank you so much everyone. As an update, Ben was released from the hospital today. They have not found the cause of his amnesia. This last time he lost 12 hours of his life, but it has happened before and will happen again. They have not been able to say why this is happening and may never know. They do promise me he is safe. It is not that he is not with it at the time, only that he cannot make new memories of it. Thank sso much for your warm, loving support! Be well, Kathy

It is ironic that I just wrote a poem about the remarkable attributes of the hummingbird. One of those is its ability to return thousands of miles to the same nesting sites every year. A remarkable memory for a very small brain.

I don't think the poem is self-serving any more than many others here. It states a concern that many have when their loved ones are dying around them. They seek outside help and declare their loss in poetry. Let's hope that Hummingbird will return and you will suffer no more loss for a long time.

unknown to us or why... My dear dear Kathy you have
