“Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them,

But to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission –

To be of service to them, whenever they require it.”

St. Francis of Assisi

I have admired this man since my early childhood

An Environmental Pioneer and a Brother to the Sun

He wrote the magnificent Canticle of the Creatures

His compassion for them lasted until his life was done

Today, his image is still found in many a garden

Whether it’s owned by a Buddhist or a Christian

I have traveled to his ancient birth place in Italy

And one day very soon, I hope to visit there again

He was born into an extremely wealthy family of means

Yet, he followed his compassionate heart so truly brave

Although mocked at first, and often ridiculed by others

Near his birth place, he would often pray inside a cave

He loved so equally - the rabbit, the sparrow, and the wolf

He believed animals to be his Brothers and Sisters on Earth

And of all the notable figures in the vast history of mankind

He’s one I’ll always admire, a man compassionate since birth

In 1979, Pope John Paul II proclaimed him ‘The Saint of Ecology’

And, we truly need many more like him these sad, destructive, days

My grandmother read Canticle of the Creatures to me when I was five

And today, all of these numerous years later, it still moves me in many ways

“All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Moon and Stars;

In the heavens you have made them, bright and precious and fair.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air.

“All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Water,

So useful, lowly, precious, and pure.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through Brother Fire,

Through whom you brighten up the night.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Earth, our Mother,

Who sustains us and governs us.

All praise be yours, my Lord, through all that you have made.”

From The Canticle of the Creatures

Today Is The Feast Day Of This Remarkable Man,

In His Honor, Today Is Also ‘World Animal Day.’

What Have You Done Lately, For Earth’s Animals?

As He Knew, They Enrich Our Lives, In So Many Ways.

Even though I am allergic to most animals, I invite all into my yard, feed them and play with them. This is one way I can 'do' for them without sneezing my head off! I have cats and dogs who visit me and none of them have ever been scared of me except one feral cat who was mistreated. This is a wonderful write and I enjoyed hearing about Saint Francis. I am saving this poem as a keeper!

St Francis is one of my heroes. On my Facebook page, yes I do Facebook LOL, I list the Prayer of St. Francis as one of my favorite works. Darrell and I have two adopted dogs and have often tried, not always successfully to help fallen wildlife we come across. It is so important to care for the least of our brothers and sisters, or are they the most?, Ed, thank you so much for your huge heart and for reminding us all about World Animals Day and the Feast Day of St. Francis! Lovely work as well. Be well, Kathy

What if I done today? I have been giving to ecological and animal charities for many years and will continue. I have treated the animals in my life with compassion and never tied them down to keep them “obedient” to me. I am signing many petitions making sure that our laws protect the environment and wild species rather than destroy their habitat with overuse, pollution and greed.

Thank you for bringing St. Francis of Assisi to my attention.

I am not a religious soul, or catholic... however
I am well aware of these Sainted men and the many
miracles in which they performed... when my
Aristotle was struggling with feline leukemia I
placed St. Francis of Assisi where he slept and
also in my room to watch over him... I believe in
the power of these great sainted men and many others
as well...

I have sought to fight for the rights of animals
and in my "spare time" I make sure I go to the humane
society and give as much of my love as possible to
all the lonely unwanted animals there that I so wish
I could take all home with me.

Blessings to you Mr. Ed for posting this lovely sainted
man and a reminder for us all
