Opera as Life
By Romana 05/10/2012
The Universe begins, a single cello note in E-flat
Followed by ominous chords and leitmotivs
Richard Wagner mounts and flies again
Aided by Robert Lepage and his Valhalla Machine.
None of this may actually be real
Gods obsessed with trinkets made of gold
That rainbow bridge is a magical path
But no sure way to enter paradise.
Followed by the deadly curse upon the gold
Gods and goddesses battle to no avail
The warning Thou Shall not Covet
A vile, warped cosmic joke.
Oh no, they stabbed Siegfried in the back
Ouch, oh my, I feel the pain too
As I was stabbed in the back by
A malevolent person I dearly trusted.
My cozy, happy life seemed ever after
Mischievous, frivolous greedy gods
Shattered my world for gold
Who, oh who will repair my soul.
I have become a supernumerary in a plot
The most far-fetched of known operas
Worse, I cannot even sing one bar
For want of skipped voice lessons.
I have barely avoided the fiery emulation
I am at a total loss to recover, to live
A bird told me I was doomed anyway
Are talking birds real psychologists?
Hey, there is a light of truth
I now have personal spirit guides
I was deluded to think I was alone
That talking bird does not really exist.
I was already on the fearless path after all
I can work all these trials through
There isn’t even anyone really to blame
I only suffer when I claim I’m a victim.
