Many years ago in NYC, for a class assignment, we were required to pick a public location, study a behavior, and imagine where such a behavior might lead. I chose to linger late at night beside a sidewalk florist at 6th and Greenwich Ave. in the Village. There, I observed a purchase being made, paid for with a pocketful of loose change, carefully counted out. Later, the experience became the basis for the character Theo in Echosis--just published. Flowers that never open
are flowers that remain without light
that smother within a rainbow plastic wrap
as if suffocation was their destiny

Petals now lay languid atop a kitchen table
begging to be caressed
to be touched for remembrance
to feel the deep breath that lifts their fragrance
a bouquet remaining unopened
given but received by no one
snap-shot never taken
a never-happened night
forever evoked

A marvelous class assignment, and a most powerful slice of life.

Looks like I'll be reading this book, too. This moving poem is made even better from your introducing the hands that paid for the flowers. It deepens the experience of loss. I love your title, Gift Card Unsigned. These two: "as if suffication was their destiny" and "a never-happened night" . . . carry such significance and pain. ~~ Diana
