IT SHOULDN’T HURT TO BE A CHILD
(bmartinez- 05/16/01)

I remember the days of sweet lollipops and cotton candies,
The freshly baked cookies on my mom’s kitchen…
Oh, how sweet her voice that filled the air…
I remember too the old man sitting on his couch
The smell of his breath under my little nostrils
Those puppy-like eyes, as I stayed by his side
He would read me fairytale books,
Oh, how I love it when he said I am his princess
He would tickle me here, there and everywhere
Till I can no longer laugh, my face would be
Full of tears as his big fingers tickle me else where
I would plead… “Daddy…stop…you’re hurting me there..”
He would say… “shhh….shhh… Daddy wont hurt you…
This would be fun”…
“You and I would play house”… the thought calm
my fears…
I smiled back…. “Okay”..i said… as he tossed me
Up and down the air…
I giggled in laughter as mom retired early to her sullen bed.

I remember the days of cold nights and empty halls
The angelic face that turned to a monster when
The long night calls
The asking eyes of an innocent fear
The pain in a child’s silent scream…
I remember YOU and the many days I asked
Why?
I remember HER and how I kept my silence
So she wont ask WHY…

Those many years I stumbled, I kept my silence
In every fall…
It’s like a disease I have to grab and hold
When in every page of my life I searched
Never to be told
An innocent pain is a lasting wound
More infectious when exposed to the truth
That ….IT SHOULDN’T HURT TO BE A CHILD
AT ALL!

(Original poem with the same title and story was written by me during my college days and is nowhere to be found now)
