why do the worms come out in the rain
do they hate the sogginess
of it all
or does the pounding of the drops
call to them like some
hypnotic ancient spell
come out come out
do they just want to check
whatís happening up top
donít they know the dangers
of sidewalks
and little nasty boys
what about streets and cars
and bikes
what is up with laying around
on the asphalt
are they worried about drowning
do they drown
Iím worried about all the worms
when it rains
go burrow
and eat dirt
just stay the hell
out from under my feet
goofy squiggly varmints
are you daft
or what

LOL!! I love this one too. I've always heard they drown. I hate it when they cling to my garage door and I open it and there hangs these nasty creatures. YUCK!! Loved this!!

I don't like worms but I feel awful when I see one that has been hurt. Nice write.

After the rain is the best time for them to be out while the ground is still moist. Of course, they also get exposed to all sorts of other dangers. Otherwise they can dry out in the sun. Very nice.

i don't know why either, but this is cute, and squiggly...maybe they just want a shower..

We just had 13 days straight of rain and I did wonder about all the worms on the sidewalk. Love that you wrote about them -- and glad to see the answers as to why they come out!

my grandson told me that the rain releases a nitrate that hurts them so the leave the dirt to escape it. and all this time i was picking them up and putting them back. i feel like a real sadist
